UNIQUE INFRASTRUCTURE CONNECTS THE REGION

A destination for celebrities, musicians, international athletes, and multinational executives, Los Cabos is undoubtedly one of the most glamorous places on the North American continent.
The region has beautiful desert landscapes and breathtaking views along the Sea of Cortez, such as the famous El Arco and all the beautiful rock formations carved by the waters coming together from the Gulf of California and the Pacific, a natural relic that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, the region includes the coastal cities of San Jose del Caba and Caba San Lucas, as well as the “tourist corridor” between them, with hotels and golf courses along the coast. With a population of more than 200,000, Los Cabos has a luxurious network of hotels and condominiums, an international airport, and several marinas to cater to its visitors, who demand comfort, entertainment, and an excellent wireless connectivity experience.

It was precisely to address this last aspect that QMC sought to enable the most modern infrastructure for mobile connectivity. The El Dorado Golf & Beach Club, a development located in the “tourist corridor”, was built in 2012 in an area of unparalleled beauty between the mountains and the coast, but initially with no mobile connection available. A paradise disconnected from everything and everyone.

In this scenario, the challenge was to bring mobile connectivity to the site without impacting the harmony between architecture and nature.

THE ROCK

Pioneering spirit and cutting-edge engineering gave rise to one of the most emblematic projects ever carried out in Latin America: the construction of a rock camouflage capable of housing the antennas needed to cover the resort. To design it, natural samples were collected in the region so that the material used was as realistic as possible.
Built of fiberglass, which does not interfere with radio frequency propagation, the rock had the antenna system implemented in its interior and went into operation in February 2013.
Strategically installed on a high mountain, the rock radiates a signal to the resort and golf course. The system also benefits the surrounding area, such as the access road to the complex, the nearby housing estate, and the beachfront.
Following damage caused by heavy storms, the rock has been given a new look and structural reinforcement in recent years, ensuring its long- term durability amid Baja California’s occasional tornadoes and earthquakes.

IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES

One of the biggest challenges of the project was the fact that the structure had to be placed in a higher region, which lacked an access road at the time. Without conventional vehicles, the materials were transported and assembled entirely by hand.
It took approximately 100 days of work to set up the infrastructure and camouflage. The project, developed in San Diego, California, also included an artistic section, finished with shrubs and native vegetation, which completed the harmonization of the rock with the mountainous scenery of Los Cabos.

NEW DEMANDS FOR SPECIAL PROJECTS IN THE REGION

In the ten years since the inauguration of mobile infrastructure in El Dorado Golf & Beach Club, other resorts in the region have requested studies of similar projects. In 2023, the construction of a second rock was completed, along the same lines, for the neighboring Chileno Bay Resorts & Residences, a hotel and condominium of luxury holiday homes.
Los Cabos is at the forefront in terms of mobile coverage with camouflaged structures in a particularly challenging and demanding environment. A previously connectivity-deprived region now has state-of-the-art telecom infrastructure, boosting the progress of the resort, its residents, and visitors.
