QMC Telecom, the holder of passive infrastructure, has closed contracts to build indoor 5G networks using Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) in 60 locations, including corporate buildings, shopping centers, hospitals, airports, and other spaces with high concentrations of people.
Among the locations to be covered are Confins Airport (BH Airport), Vila Nova Star Hospital (SP), Bourbon Curitiba Hotel (PR), and RioSul Shopping (RJ), which are expected to provide indoor 5G signal ‘within the next few months,’ according to the company. The projects have already been formally contracted and are in the implementation phase.
Indoor 5G coverage is not a regulatory obligation outlined in the 5G tender. However, implementation is strategic to meet the demand for 5G connectivity within large developments.
For Murilo Almeida, President of QMC Telecom in Brazil, DAS is superior to the use of small cells. ‘We are witnessing a growing interest throughout Latin America in strengthening indoor coverage. Providing adequate quality coverage indoors through outdoor networks – the traditional towers – was already challenging in previous technologies, and now with 5G, it’s almost impossible,’ he comments.
The Distributed Antenna System (DAS) solution for 5G consists of a network of intelligent, low-power antennas strategically distributed throughout a development. The network connects to a central unit that receives, modulates, manages, and optimally distributes the signal from operators, ensuring uniform and high-quality coverage for mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, or IoT applications, in areas with a high user influx where signals from traditional towers struggle to penetrate.
